The New Face of May 29: Goodluck Jonathan

May 29 is the beginning of a new government in Nigeria. On this particular day and month after elections the President and Vice President will be inaugurated into office. The forefathers had chosen the date of May 29 after the independent from Britain because it took weeks to collect and count the votes and to allow those who will go to Presidential Election Tribunal to challenge the outcome of the elections results before those elect get into office. In a tradition dating to the 1960, Presidents are not publicly inaugurated on Sundays but this year inauguration fall on Sunday, which marked it a historical inauguration.
President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and Vice President, Arc. Namadi Sambo, were the new face of this year inauguration following their victory in April general election. At the Eagle square in Abuja hopes were very high as 150 million Nigerians watched the first man from South-South/ South-East to be inaugurated as the President of the most populous black nation on earth.
Although this year polls were the very first both national and foreign observers “ever considered free and fair” but not free from violence. An Islamic group from the Northern Nigerian called Boko Haram during the time of the election unleashes bombing to disturbed the poll. They claim that the poll was not free and fair that it was rigging to favour Jonathan.
Immediately after he was declared the win, Jonathan addresses the post-election violence and bombing of some part of the country by Boko Haram Islamic group and warns that the violent could threaten and plunged the country into instability.
Before he was elected into power, millions of Nigeria has put their faith to the man they called “new face of faith”- the luckiest man and new breed in Nigerian polities. They think he had answer to thousands of problems that deviating progress and development in the county. According to All Africa.com report, Jonathan was voted into power in his capacity as a person and not out of love for his party, the PDP. This voter behaviour should compel him to exercise independent judgment in his actions.
Nigerians believe that their assorted problems can be sort out by Jonathan and his government. Now they have elected him (fulfill their heart desire) and can he bring the faith to life or can he flop like those before him and all their promises. Nigerians were looking forward to Mr. President to demonstrate that he has the power and capacity to bring life and hope to them.
