We are what we do

Written in bold with a company logo and sparkling like an image of most respected and South African statesman, Nelson Mandela on R5 coin the ad read: “We are what we do, all rights reserved. We create products, tools, live experiences and all sorts of other creations that make our actions more fun and more doable”. The ad shows how companies go a long way to describe who they are and what they do in order to achieve their goals.

As a public relations students or practitioners we are what we do- reputation management just like the above company. We build reputation to manage reputation which matters a lot in our career advancement. The reason to build and manage our reputation is simple: in the next years if not now reputation management will be the most dominant force or a key factor in public relations profession.

Today, many companies realised that a good name can be their most important asset and actually boost their reputation, add value to their companies, attract more and better candidates for employment. So they employ public relations professionals with good reputations to advise them on how to build, manage and defend their reputations. Like a saying goes, “a good image is a terrible thing to lose. It has been said that 30 years of hard work can be destroyed in just 60 seconds”. So do companies realize and put their image in our hands.

For public relations experts to become an organizational reputation management, building, managing and defending their own reputation will be their number one priority. Because we are reputation managers . . . we are what we do. Public relations are organisational reputation engineers.

So no matter how we think about it our actions reflect what we do.

A click of button: build your brand.

Almost every set of my journey up to these stay has been observed and scrupulously noted down, page by page, on Internet beginning from the day I signed in. Even before I know I was been followed, my name has been making waves on YAHOO, GOOGLE, WIKIPEDIA and in all corners of social media-FACEBOOK, MYSPACE, TWITTER.
Just on a click of button, my name applied as a name on reference books preliminary from the day I was born, what I have said and say to, information I click on, where am from and even
where am go next. In fact, I was known by what I know and defined by what I shared.
These are the way we operate now on CLICK CLICK CLICK, which helps me understand why some people devote such a large amount of time clicking on something online. Although there are a number of reasons we click on Internet but I agree the most significant is promoting ourselves aka personal branding. Brands are born experience and reflect reputation. Building your brand is all about showcasing what sets you apart from others.
We are all brands, I was told. If you are not branding yourself, you are not adding value to your already know world. Brand is publicity and visibility, expands influence and connection to the organizations. Branding is developing an image and career advancement. It defines who you are and create in the mind of others the perception that there is no other better than you.
The Internet lets us brand and connects effortlessly. We can have intense relationships with others in another country and even those we never met just because of our personal branding. We can find people with remarkably obscure interests matching our own brand. What Internet has given us is a set of tools that allow us to create and brand, and market ourselves. We are no long invisible from the rest of the World. Our tomorrow is now deciding on just one click. Craft your identity and develop your personal brand.

Why are we afraid of the wrong things?

I am afraid of the wrong things as I am sure majority of people do. The question is why are we afraid of the wrong things? Can I say it’s because of what we read in our local newspapers and Internet. Everyday, we are flooded by a barrage of media messages that announce what appears to be a deadly tragedy somewhere in our World.

At home on the Radio we hear another story that seems to feature yet another victim of some rare diseases, poverty, crimes, fires, wars and car crashes that kill millions and left thousands wounded. Television newscasters never failed to discuss the victims of suicide bombers and the different group of terrorist operating around our borders.

Could it be God and its judgment- hell? That’s to say we are afraid to go against God or against other people knowly fully well about its condemnation or because of certain books we read that instill fear in us or social customs, traditions and law of nation that we are meant to keep, that’s we are afraid not to break any of these laws?

Ary Bhushan noted that most of the people are afraid of something. Some are afraid of being blamed in society, some are afraid of death, rejection, and failure. Other gets afraid when they see people in distress and think that they may meet a similar fate.

Whatever it’s we are afraid of let’s us learn not to be afraid of the wrong things. We can learn to live a of life bravery, which will give us enough courage to face our fears and challenges of this World.
